Japanese Soul Food in Central Hong Kong

If you’re looking to escape the black suit restaurants of Central Hong Kong and entertain clients and colleagues somewhere a little more discrete (and affordable), you can’t go past the newly opened URA Japanese Delicacy, named for the Japanese word for ‘hidden’.

Located on the cusp between Central and Sheung Wan, URA is the brainchild of the Chang brothers, owners of nearby Indonesian restaurant IR1968, and showcases their passion for Japanese soul food, cuisine that’s palate pleasing but rarely encountered outside of Japan. All ingredients are flown in daily from Osaka and are incorporated by renowned chefs Takaoka Kouji and Kimura Junichiro into a menu that fuses Japanese produce and techniques with traditionally Western concepts.

“The cuisine at my new restaurant can only be described as the hidden secret of Japanese food and we are so excited to be able to share this secret with food lovers in Hong Kong” says Hudson Chang.

Highlights of the menu, which is served in the main manga and Meiji era-themed dining room, on an expansive terrace, or at the speakesy-esque bar counter, include spicy cod roe cheese toast; the melt in your mouth tuna akami cutlet sandwich; and onion rings made with sweet fruit-like onions from Awaji island, Japan. There is delicate but addictive tuna tartar with egg yolk, jet-fresh sashimi, and even a wide selection of charcoal grilled meat and seafood dishes.

Special omasake tasting menus can be prepared for corporate groups, can be served in the intimate 14-seat private dining room, and can be matched with an enviable private sake label collection and a curated series of hard-to-source Japanese whiskies. www.urajapan.com
