Injecting a dynamic dose of Californian living into the city’s dining scene, Big Sur has opened at the heart of Soho, offering business travellers an all-day venue for casual catch ups and corporate dining. Inspired by California’s barbeque and craft beer culture, and created by Woolly Pig Concepts, the local hospitality gurus behind nearby 12,000 Francs and Elements’ Madam S’ate, Big Sur offers a contemporary, latino-leaning take on classic barbeque, using the best ingredients from across California.
Open daily from 8am till late, Big Sur has been designed to be more than just a restaurant – it’s a place to meet and soak in the ambiance of Central. Enjoy a freshly poured craft beer or an inspiring mezcal with fresh pressed juice cocktail. House-made chocolate crullers, maple pecan donuts and barista coffee; as well as healthy salads and fresh pressed juices, all available for takeaway, making it ideal for business travellers staying in the many local hotels and serviced apartment buildings. In addition there’s fresh seafood, smoked and grilled dishes, and indulgent desserts, ensuring this new destination dining venue has something for every hungry soul, no matter the time of day.
Travel the mesmerising California coast, one dish at a time. Highlights of the new menu include ‘Baja’ tacos stuffed with prawns and house made ‘Big Sur-izo’ sausage; charcoal grilled Californian striploin; authentic Santa Maria Tri Tip; pulled pork burger; and whole barbecue seabass. Finish with sweet touches like Texas Sheet Cake with chocolate glaze and walnuts; crème brulee waffle with homemade coconut ice cream; and baked apple crisp with cinnamon and oatmeal topping.
To match with your meal Big Sur’s bar is home to 15 taps, which will serve 14 local rotating brews created by Hong Kong’s Young Master Brewery, as well as a tap-served gin and tonic. The beers of Young Master Brewery deliver the many cultural and culinary influences that define California, making them an ideal match for this new barbecue joint.
“It’s been a pleasure developing Big Sur’s unique craft beer program, which will include offerings from op-tier local and California breweries,” says Young Master Brewery Founder Rohit Dugar. “Big Sur’s 14 taps will pour refreshing, all-day session beers like the crushable Another One 再來 as well as ultra-fresh hop-forward beers that are synonymous with California’s beer culture. A concise but thoughtfully curated list of rare barrel-aged and sour beers, both on tap and in bottles, will complete the offering, pleasing beer geeks and novices alike.”
Diners looking for something a little headier will enjoy Big Sur’s imaginative cocktail selection, as well as its more than 20 tequilas and 8 mezcals. Try a shot of these timeless Mexican spirits with a traditional chaser – Sangrita, with tomato, lime juice and spices; or Verdita, with cucumber, pineapple, cilantro and jalapeno. Match your drinks with Big Sur’s signature bar snacks, which range from jalapeno poppers; and Salchippapas, triple-cooked French fries from South America; to Big Sur popcorn tossed with Sichuan pepper butter.
Located at the base of the coveted new serviced apartment property Staunton Suites, Big Sur’s distinctive look is the creation of American restaurant architect Sean Dix. Inspired by the lines of a traditional Californian diner, and complemented by the use of sunny blue and blonde timber and stone floors, Big Sur has been designed to transition during the day, from a welcoming morning pit stop and vibrant lunch destination, to SoHo’s coolest new brew bar and barbecue restaurant. The eatery’s clean, fresh and contemporary look is further accentuated by eclectic, insightful art pieces, including the signature California soon-to-be-iconic bear head sculpture, and full-sized grizzly statue overlooking the entrance.
Other unique pieces include commissioned wall art by London-based illustrator Sam Brewster – one of the restaurant’s namesake region, and the other of Hong Kong – marking the renowned artist’s Hong Kong debut.
With a dining room catering up to 40 diners and a stylish long bar serving another 10, Big Sur also makes the most of Hong Kong’s temperate climate with al fresco comfort seating.
Open daily from 8am till late, in addition to its all-day bar menu, the new restaurant will serve weekend brunch – including SoHo’s best Summerland Beach Combo, waffle or French toast with house smoked bacon, and two eggs – from 10am-3pm, daily lunch menu from 12pm-3pm and dinner menu from 5pm until late. www.bigsur.com.hk
