JAL to Luanch New Low Cost Carrier

Japan Airlines will launch a new Low Cost Carrier for international routes. The new budget airline will service medium to long-haul routes to tap into growing travel demand across Asia.

Based at Narita International Airport outside Tokyo, the yet-to-be-named airline will offer flights to Asia, Europe, and the Americas, according to JAL. It is expected the carrier will commence operations in 2020, using a fleet of cost-effective Boeing 787-8 aircraft in a similar model to the successful Scoot airline based in Singapore. The national carrier of Japan, JAL plans for the new airline to reach profitability within three years, riding on a surge of travel across Asia as both Millennials and empty-nester markets start to explore new medium to long-haul destinations.

Japan is becoming an increasingly popular base for low-cost airlines, with carriers Vanilla, Jetstar Japan, and Peach, the LLC of JAL competitor ANA, already offering extensive regional networks. The new airline will be used to tap into a much larger traveller base and might also be used to source travellers into the Narita hub from where they can travel on JAL’s network.
