Sydney Gets Departure SmartGates

Qualifying international passengers leaving Australia from Sydney Airport will soon be able to enjoy a faster airport run when the airport introduces its SmartGate passport control technology in June.

Similar to the automated channels already in place for inbound passengers to Australia, travellers will simply scan their microchipped ‘ePassport’ and front a camera to have their face scanned for comparison to their passport photo.

“Sydney Airport has been working closely with Customs to automate processes and improve customer experience, said a Sydney Airport spokesperson.

The SmartGate lanes for outbound passengers will be open to passports from every country, although many foreign nationals will still need to be manually processed when arriving in Australia. www.sydneyairport.com.au
