Peninsula Launches Sustainable Room Amenities

The Peninsula Hotels has created a bespoke line of sustainable guest room fragrance amenities that promise to bring each hotel’s destination to life.

The new line, which is presented in 99.9% petroleum plastic-free packaging, includes curated fragrances inspired by the group’s hotels and its home city of Hong Kong. The distinctive line of environmentally-friendly guest room amenities offers a holistic approach to capturing a destination’s individuality.

Created by talented fragrance curators in each The Peninsula hotel destination, who tap into their extensive knowledge of the native botanical ingredients of the location, each bathroom amenity set features a locally-created, bespoke fragrance made from all-natural ingredients. These bespoke scents are infused in bathroom amenities including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body milk, and soap.

Each fragrance captures a sense of place, from The Peninsula Hong Kong’s jasmine, agarwood, and amber scent, created by Angel Cheung; and The Peninsula New York’s golden quince, peony, and musk blend by Mackenzie Reilly; to The Peninsula Paris’ rose Damascena, incense and labdanum resin fragrance by Céline Barel.

All fragrance amenities in the new signature line are made with natural ingredients and aromatic
essences, including skin-soothing emollients like shea butter, sweet almond oil, and olive oil. All are gluten-free, soy-free, and free of harmful chemicals such as parabens, silicone, and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

In keeping with The Peninsula Hotels’ commitment to sustainable luxury, the amenities also use
packaging that is 99.9% free of single-use petroleum plastics, with containers for body milk, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner made of aluminium from 45% recycled sources (which is easily recyclable in many parts of the world, unlike most other materials); while container caps are also made from recyclable metal alloy. Additionally, amenities such as shower caps, toothbrushes, and razors which formerly incorporated petroleum plastics have been replaced with more ecologically-minded alternatives made from corn starch, wheat, wood, and recycled metal. Inner plastic wrappings for these amenities have also eliminated and to maintain hygiene and humidity control, certified sustainable paper packaging, coated on the inside with UV-oil, and externally treated with a perforated seal to be tamper-evident, has been employed.

“This creative endeavour is a groundbreaking achievement – not just for The Peninsula Hotels, but for our guests as well,” says Gareth Roberts, Group Director of Brand and Operations Support for The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited, owner and operator of The Peninsula Hotels. “Now, those who stay at our hotels can rest assured that their luxurious, indulgent guest room products have been made with consideration towards minimising the environmental impact.”

The new guest room amenities were debuted at The Peninsula Hong Kong, The Peninsula Shanghai and The Peninsula Beijing and will be available across all Peninsula properties starting in December 2020. Bespoke fragrances will also be introduced to the projects under development in London, Istanbul, and Yangon as they open.
