JACDEC Names World’s Top 12 Safest Airlines

German airline safety data evaluation firm Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC), has released a list of the top 12 safest airlines, with a summarized safety review for 2016.

According to the report, the world’s top 12 safest airlines are Cathay Pacific Airways, Air New Zealand, and Hainan Airlines, followed by Qatar Airways, KLM, Eva Air, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qantas, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Lufthansa.

For the past three years, Cathay Pacific has sat in the top spot. The Cathay Pacific Group, including Dragonair and Air Hong Kong, now operates more than 150 aircraft to over 130 destinations across the globe.

Air New Zealand has taken second place, up from seventh the previous year, and sixth in 2015.

Hainan Airlines is the sole mainland China-based airline among the list, climbing two notches to third place. The airline has logged over five million hours of safe flight as of December 2015.

The UAE’s Emirates, which was at number two last year, dropped five positions to seventh safest airline in the world, in part due to the crash landing of EK521 in 2016.

JACDEC calculates its annual rankings based on aircraft loss accidents and serious incidents where an accident nearly occurred, over the past 30 years. Despite the crashes involving Emirates, EgyptAir, AeroSucre, and Pakistan International Airlines, among others, 2016 was the second safest year on record.
