The historic Hotel Woolstore 1888 Sydney – Handwritten Collection has officially completed its transition in joining Accor
After spending the last four months making enhancements to improve the guest experience and paying homage to the hotel’s rich history, the century-old Sydney landmark —a restored wool store originally built in 1888— fully embodies the unique spirit and personalised service of the Handwritten Collection brand.
The iconic Darling Harbour property has undergone a series of transformative changes aside from its rebrand, including a complete overhaul of its amenities, guest experiences and an exciting new food and beverage concept.
Launched in 2023, Handwritten Collection is an anthology of carefully curated addresses, each resonating with the warmth and character of its dedicated hosts. With a global footprint of over 15 hotels, Handwritten Collection beckons Instinctive Connectors – individuals who value human connection above all else. For these seekers of authentic experiences, Handwritten Collection offers more than just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to immerse oneself in an intimate setting, forging genuine connections with fellow guests and passionate hosts.
In line with this ethos, guests will receive a signature welcome gift in their room upon arrival. The thoughtful keepsakes are designed to offer a heart-warming and personal touch, linked to Hotel Woolstore 1888 Sydney’s heritage. Mementoes will change throughout the year and will include items that act as a small reminder of the hotel’s storied history, such as a limited edition lip balm, and a taster of Hartshorn Sheep’s Whey Vodka which was named Best Vodka in the World in 2018.
Intertwining the hotel’s Australian heritage with Spanish influences, a new dining concept is soon to be revealed. Formally Mister Percy, the transformation of this venue will embody the warmth and charm of Spanish culture, offering a snack-abundant menu which wouldn’t be amiss in the bustling side streets of Barcelona.
With its contemporary design and industrial-chic interiors with modern and pop art, the four-level sandstone and brick building has now been adorned both inside and out with the signature markings of the Handwritten Collection brand.
Boasting 90 guestrooms, each of its eight room types – inclusive of four suites which feature panoramic views and penthouse options – has been renamed to honour historical sheep breeds and pastoral culture, celebrating the property which is the fourth oldest of 21 surviving wool stores in Sydney.
Ensuring the hotel’s original character shines through, Hotel Woolstore 1888 Sydney’s reimagined breakfast menu will now include a Sheepherder’s breakfast, a hearty meal of baked eggs and potatoes, similar to what pastoral workers eat before starting a long day at work.
At the helm of the hotel’s transition, general manager, Roya l’Anson has brought her valuable experience from previous roles within the Accor family. Having started her career as a room attendant, she has progressed quickly through her 17-year-long career, and most recently led the 91-room ibis Sydney Barangaroo.
Handwritten Collection is a global portfolio of curated addresses enriching Accor’s offering in the collection brands segment. Since launching last year, Accor has successfully opened two Handwritten Collection hotels in Australia – Hotel Morris Sydney and Wonil Hotel Perth.
Guests will benefit from London-based fragrance house IIUVO Soigné’s bathroom amenities. A new addition to rooms, the amenities are also a trademark of Handwritten Collection’s other Australian properties.
Hotel Woolstore 1888 is located in the centre of Pyrmont, a 10-minute walk from the Sydney International Convention Centre and the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
