Here’s How to Get the Most From Your Dubai Transit

Whether you’re overnighting or just passing through, there’s a Dubai itinerary for every transiting business traveller.

There are few aviation hubs quite like the sprawling Dubai International through which to transit. The city, in partnership with its airline, Emirates, has worked hard to make Dubai a favourite and convenient stopover for all points east and west – the airport, frequently awarded among the best in the world, currently serves 260 direct destinations in 106 countries and sees more than 90 million passengers pass through its terminals each year.

Four Hours of Less

With less than a few hours, you may not have a chance to leave the airport and get back in time for your connecting flight. However, that’s not all bad news, as Dubai International (DXB) airport is actually a pretty great place to spend your layover. With over 30,000 sqm of retail space, those looking for some relaxing retail therapy can revel in the numerous brands housed there. From cosmetics to confectionery and electronics to books, Dubai Duty-Free can’t be beaten. You can also take a dip in the on-site swimming pool or experience the pure luxury of the premium lounges.

These include multiple signature Emirates lounges, all of which offer direct gate access, shower suites and a range of dining; a Skyteam alliance lounge for premium travellers flying on member airlines; the pay-in Plaza Premium VIP Room, which boasts comfortable lounges, showers, and live cooking stations; and the popular pay-in Al Majlis VIP Lounge, which also has multiple locations throughout the airport. Priority pass users have access to several lounges, including Skyteam and the comfortable Ahlan Business Class Lounge, as well as the sleep ‘n fly Sleep Lounge & Showers, small sleep cabins bookable by the hour, while Star Alliance premium passengers can access the Lufthansa lounge.

Four to Eight Hours

If time is tight, it’s important to get your priorities right. Luckily, a visit to Downtown Dubai will ensure you tick off a few sights in one go. Take a 15-minute taxi ride to Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. It’s best to plan ahead and book a time slot in advance so you can head straight up to the observation deck on Level 124 and see one of the most breathtaking views.

While you’re in the Downtown neighbourhood, you can also visit The Dubai Mall for more family fun and shopping, or refuel at Time Out Market (above) next door that features the very best of Dubai dining under one roof.

Between Eight & 15 Hours

After Downtown’s highlights, your next goal should be getting a taste of old Dubai by taking a trip to the traditional souks. Situated on the banks of Dubai Creek, the city’s souks are at the centre of the city’s heritage and history of trade.

Afterwards cross the waters of the creek onboard a traditional abra for just AED1 (US$0.27), and head out for more souk shopping with gold, spices, textiles and souvenirs available in the winding alleyways of Deira.

You can also opt for rest and relaxation at Hotel Dubai International, the airport’s own five-star hotel, located in Terminal 3, or at one of the many hotels in close proximity to the airport, including the Premier Inn Dubai International Airport Hotelibis Styles Dubai Airport, and Holiday Inn Express Dubai Airport.
