Cathay Pacific has commenced a new non-stop service between Hong Kong and the northwest Chinese city of Urumqi.

The new four-times-weekly service expands Cathay Group’s Chinese Mainland network to 20 destinations, reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as a global aviation hub.

Urumqi, the vibrant capital of Xinjiang, emerges as a strategic gateway within China’s Belt and Road Initiative, linking Hong Kong business travellers to a bustling northwestern hub known for its cultural tapestry and proximity to Central Asia.

Cathay Pacific’s direct flights between Hong Kong and Urumqi, operating on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, will be operated by the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft, providing customers with comfortable Business and Economy cabins. The northbound flight, CX998, departs Hong Kong at 01.30 and arrives in Urumqi at 07.00. The south-bound service departs Urumqi at 10.15 and arrives in Hong Kong at 15.20.

The new route aligns with the Central Government’s expansion of the Individual Visit Scheme in May 2024, which added Urumqi among eight cities, facilitating seamless travel. Beyond passenger services, the corridor is poised to transform air cargo logistics, funnelling freight from global markets through Hong Kong International Airport to mainland cities, enhancing trade efficiency.

Urumqi’s strategic location bridges Asia and Europe, offering business travellers access to emerging markets along the Belt and Road. Its blend of Silk Road heritage, from the Grand Bazaar’s spice-laden stalls to the Tianshan Mountains’ dramatic vistas, appeals to executives seeking cultural immersion alongside deal-making.

With HK Express,  Cathay’s low-cost carrier, launching services to Changzhou and Yiwu in May, Cathay Group will connect to 22 Chinese Mainland destinations, operating over 300 weekly return flights during peak summer. This expansion underscores Cathay’s commitment to bolstering connectivity, providing corporate travellers with unparalleled choice and flexibility.
