Singapore Changi Airport Named the World’s Best Airport

The 2017 World Airport Awards has announced the world’s top airports for the year, with Singapore’s Changi Airport heading the list, beating out stiff global competition.

Changi International was followed by Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), Incheon International Airport, Munich Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, Hamad International Airport, Chubu Centrair Nagoya, Zurich Airport, London Heathrow Airport, and Frankfurt Airport.

Voted by air travellers as the World’s Best Airport for the fifth consecutive year, Changi Airport is the world’s sixth busiest airport for international traffic.  It served a record 58.7 million passengers from around the globe in 2016.  More than 360 retail stores and 140 dining outlets are situated across three terminals to cater to passengers and visitors.  With over 100 airlines providing connectivity to 380 cities worldwide, Changi Airport handles about 7,000 flights every week. The airport has also scooped the award for the Best Airport Leisure Amenities.

Tokyo International Airport, or Haneda Airport, is the primary base of Japan’s two major domestic airlines, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, as well as Air Do, Skymark Airlines, Solaseed Air, and StarFlyer. Haneda handled over 75million passengers in 2015, and was the third busiest airport in Asia and the fifth busiest in the world, after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport, Dubai International Airport, and O’Hare International Airport. It is able to handle 90 million passengers per year following its expansion in 2010.

Incheon International Airport is the largest airport in South Korea, the primary airport serving the Seoul Capital Area. It is rated as the world’s cleanest airport and the world’s best international transit airport by Skytrax. The airport has a golf course, spa, private sleeping rooms, an ice skating rink, a casino, indoor gardens and a Museum of Korean Culture. Average departure and arrival takes 19 minutes and 12 minutes respectively, as compared to the worldwide average of 60 minutes and 45 minutes respectively, making it one of the fastest airports in the world for customs processing.

The World Airport Awards are the most prestigious accolades for world airports voted by customers in the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. The World Airport Awards are a global benchmark of airport excellence, and widely known as the Passengers Choice Awards.

The 2017 Awards are based on 13.82 million airport survey questionnaires that were completed by 105 different nationalities of air travellers during the survey period. The survey covered 550 airports worldwide and evaluated traveller experiences across different airport service and product key performance indicators, from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.
