Delta Shakes Up Velocity Programme

Members of Virgin Australia’s Velocity programme travelling on Delta Airlines will soon be able to earn more Velocity frequent flyer points when travelling in business or first class, and on Delta One fares, but could potentially end up with fewer points when travelling on less expensive tickets.

Currently, all fares for premium cabins – business and first class – earn 1.5 Veolcity points per mile. In economy, the earnings range from 1.25 Velocity points for higher-priced tickets down to 0.5 Velocity points for the cheapest fares.

Beginning on June 1, 2015, the majority of passengers travelling in business and first class with be able to earn two Velocity points per mile, or 1.75 points when travelling on a slightly cheaper fare. However, those flying on the cheapest business class, first class or Delta One fares will earn 1.25 Velocity points per mile.

For passengers travelling in economy on the most expensive tickets – Y, B or M fares – will earn 1 point per mile rather than the current 1.25; the cheapest fares – labelled Q and K – will get only half their current earnings with the reduction from one to 0.5 points per mile.

These changes will only affect members of the Velocity programmes booked directly on Delta flights. Passengers booked on Virgin Australia but travelling on Delta codeshare flights will still continue to earn the standard Virgin Australia frequent flyer points and status credits. www.velocityfrequentflyer.com
